Spend a day in San Diego at Balboa Park playing golf, touring the world-famous San Diego Zoo or visiting a museum. Just outside of town, Torrey Pines State Reserve offers a somewhat wilder terrain where visitors can view rare birds and stately trees.
Balboa Park is America's largest urban cultural park. It contains diversified museums ranging from horticultural to astronomical. The place is home to Botanical Building's sublime lily pond, El Prado etc. Balboa Park is also home to Children's Museum, and the Fleet Science Center.
Sea World. This is one of the largest highlights of San Diego where you can get close encounters with Killer Whales, dolphins, penguins, manatees, and other aquatic wildlife. There are tide pools, hands on exhibits, and other rides your family can enjoy for hours. Purchase your tickets before arriving for the best value.
The San Diego Harbor is not only a great place to walk along, it's also the home of the Maritime Museum, which comprises four historic sea vessels. These include: the topsail schooner "California", the world-famous "Star of India", the 18th century Royal Navy frigate "HMS Surprise" (which was featured in the movie Master and Commander), and an authentic Cold War Soviet submarine. All of this within walking distance of downtown and the shops of Sea Port village.
Salazar's is a gem which takes you back in time to the Spanish occupancy of southern California. Imagine heavily mustachioed men complete with sombreros, senaritas in brightly colored frills and dresses and dancing to Spanish mariachi music on the jukebox. The food is amongst the very best out of Mexico itself with tamales, chiles rellenos, beans and rice and of course, enchiladas.
Continuing the marine theme, San Diego is well endowed with beaches and boating facilities, maritime museums, harbor trips, whale watching trips, La Jolla cave visits and many other maritime related activities. While there is no one dominant attraction to point to, as a group, San Diego's links to the sea attract a great deal of visitor and local interest. San Diego is also a major base for the US Navy.
There are also many exciting rides that you may want to give a try. One of the rides is Journey To Atlantis. This is a water coaster ride that will bring you through uncharted waters where mysterious mists and unpredictable drops lurk around every turn. Be expected to plunge down eight stories and get drenched. The next exciting ride is the Shipwreck rapids where you will sit on a raft-like inner tube together with other passengers enjoying an exciting five-minute journey through an isolated South Sea island. Next visit the Wild Artic, a simulated jet helicopter flies you to a remote research station to experience a wild adventure of real bumps, jumps and zips.
Dining Choices- Many hotels will have at least one restaurant, while others will also have a pub or multiple eateries to choose from. There is usually room service that can be ordered between mid-morning and 10pm. If there is a strong desire to eat outside the restaurant, the main desk generally has a map or a listing of places nearby to eat at.
For the most part, San Diego locals tend to spend more time in theaters and museums than they do drinking; however, when they do go out on the town, they prefer nightclubs and live music venues to the more traditional bars and pubs. Many of these establishments are clustered along the beaches, though the Gaslamp, Old City, and Downtown districts are lively spots as well.
